In 1994, he graduated from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) with a degree in visual art and in 2021 was named QUT's Outstanding Indigenous Alumnus. Daniel is the second recipient of the First Nations Writer-in-Residence Fellowship, jointly offered by CAS and the First Nations Australian Writer's Network (FNAWN). He is embarking on a creative literary practice after three decades working as a radio journalist with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). As the ABC's Editor of Indigenous Radio, he oversees two longstanding flagship programs, Awaye! and Speaking Out and is much-loved host of The Art Show podcast. His first book, Close to the Subject (Magabala Books, 2023) won the 2024 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Non-Fiction and the Indigenous Writing Prize, a category of the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards. While at Cambridge, Daniel undertook further research into his current literary project, a double biography of two Aboriginal men who came to Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
